Create a category with a name, color, unit type, and VAT/cannabis flags.

Open in dashboardCategories

Overview

Categories are the taxonomy for your catalog. Each category has a name, a color, a unit type (default / weight / volume / piece), and optional flags for VAT and cannabis classification. Products must belong to a category.

When to use it

  • Introducing a new type of product (e.g., "Edibles", "Merchandise")
  • Setting up the catalog during initial store setup
  • Adding a category-specific low-stock threshold or service charge

How to use it

  1. Open Categories and click Create Category in the header.
  2. Fill the form:
    • Name (required) โ€” what the category is called.
    • Group (optional) โ€” assign it to an existing category group.
    • Color โ€” pick from the color palette; shows up on badges.
    • Unit โ€” DEFAULT (each), WEIGHT (grams), VOLUME (ml), or PIECE.
    • Qty per unit โ€” for products sold in bundles (e.g., 6-pack).
    • Low-stock threshold โ€” inherited by products in this category.
    • VAT toggle โ€” whether items in this category are VAT-liable.
    • Cannabis toggle โ€” enables strain profiles and regulatory flows.
    • Service charge โ€” optional percentage added at checkout.
    • Products โ€” optional multi-select to attach existing products in one go.
  3. Save. The category appears in the table and is available to assign to products.

Tips & gotchas

  • Name is required; everything else is optional.
  • Toggling Cannabis on a category unlocks strain profiles on its products and routes them through Cannabis Flowers analytics.
  • The Weight / Volume unit types unlock qty rounding settings at the org level โ€” e.g., rounding grams to 0.5.
  • Once products are attached, changing the unit type can affect their iPad POS behavior โ€” double-check before switching.
